Can foreigners open a bank account in Thailand?

Usually only with the right visa, and each bank sets its own rules. KASIKORNBANK asks for a passport and a non-immigrant visa and excludes tourist visas, visa on arrival, visa exemption and the DTV for its savings account; Bangkok Bank asks foreign applicants to confirm documents with a branch.

There is no single approval rule for every Thai bank. KASIKORNBANK says foreign applicants need a passport, a non-immigrant visa, identification from their home country and documents matching their purpose of stay. It explicitly excludes tourist visas, visa on arrival, visa exemption and Destination Thailand Visa (DTV) from this account product.

Bangkok Bank lists a 500-baht opening deposit for its savings account but asks foreign applicants to contact a branch for their document requirements. Do not treat another bank’s checklist or an old online anecdote as a guarantee.

What documents do you need to open a Thai bank account?

Bring your original passport, proof of your current permission to stay and proof of why you are in Thailand, such as a work permit, employer letter or school letter. Call the branch first to confirm the exact list, the minimum deposit and mobile-banking setup.

Bring your valid original passport and evidence of your current permission to stay. Depending on your situation and the bank, bring a work permit, employer letter, school letter or other proof of why you are in Thailand. Ask the branch whether it also wants proof of address, a Thai phone number or extra identification.

Call the branch first, name your visa category and ask about the exact account type, required originals, minimum deposit and mobile-banking activation. A complete application can still be refused after the bank’s own checks.

How can you pay in Thailand without a Thai bank account?

Keep a working card and some cash, use cross-border QR payments where your app and the merchant’s QR code support them, or consider a tourist prepaid option such as KASIKORNBANK’s PAY & TOUR card. Test any route with a small purchase first.

Keep a working card and some cash. Cross-border QR payments exist, but they depend on the participating app, country and merchant QR code; not every PromptPay code will accept every foreign app. Check the Bank of Thailand’s current linkage information and test with a small purchase.

KASIKORNBANK offers PAY & TOUR, a prepaid card and e-wallet for foreign tourists. Its product sheet says the card works at Visa merchants and can be linked to the TAGTHAi app for QR payments. Check issuance, top-up, fees and acceptance with KASIKORNBANK before relying on it.

Can you pay with PromptPay QR codes using Wise in Thailand?

Only if you are eligible: Wise offers PromptPay QR scanning to eligible personal customers whose registered address is in Thailand, rolled out progressively during 2026. It is not available to every traveller’s existing Wise account.

Wise describes PromptPay QR scanning as a feature for eligible personal customers whose registered address is in Thailand, rolled out progressively during 2026. It is not a blanket promise that every traveller’s existing Wise account can scan Thai PromptPay codes.

Wise’s Thailand verification page lists accepted residence documents and includes DTV, while excluding tourist visas and short-term tourist stamps. Wise eligibility is separate from a Thai bank’s account-opening policy: KASIKORNBANK excludes DTV for the account described above.

How do you avoid bank-account scams in Thailand?

Apply only through the bank’s or provider’s official channel, never hand your passport, card, PIN, OTP or account access to an “account opening” intermediary, and check the recipient name, amount and currency before confirming any QR payment.

Apply through the bank or provider’s official channel. Do not hand over your passport, card, PIN, OTP or account control to an “account opening” intermediary. Before confirming a QR payment, check the recipient name, amount, currency and any conversion fee. Keep a backup way to pay in case an app or QR route is unavailable.
